How to mulch around Trees or Pots

What is Mulching?

Mulching is like a gardening technique that is used to improve the quality of the soil. It also helps the plant to grow in unfavorable conditions as the mulch which can be organic or inorganic provides a healthy space for the plants to grow easily.

The mulch can be of different organic things like dry leaves, grass, and wood shavings. These things cover the soil and are also moist. It protects the water from evaporating and at the time of decomposing; it becomes fertilizers for the plants.

How to mulch around trees?

As we discussed earlier that mulching is a very important practice to keep the roots of the plants healthy and for water retention. It also helps in control the growth of the weeds around the tree and improves the soil structure and aeration.

To properly mulch around the trees, you need to follow these steps:

  • The mulch should be 2-4 inches deep and it shouldn’t be too close to the trunk of the tree. Make sure that the mulch is at least 5 feet away from the tree.
  • You can use natural mulch like woodchips, or bark chips. It can change the natural pH level of the soil and also provides necessary nutrients to the soil.
  • Spread these mulches around the trees and spread them evenly so that you can give as many nutrients to the soil as possible and also keeps the soil moist.

What is volcano mulching?

It is an improper way of mulching in which the mulching got piled up against the trunk of the tree. For the proper way of mulching, the mulch shouldn’t touch the trunk of the tree. If it touches the tree, then it invites the pests and decays and also has the chance to kill the trees.

How volcano mulching kills the tree?
  • Volcano mulching means piling up the mulch against the tree. So if the mulch depth is around 4 inches then it can stop the exchange of air for the trees.
  • If the mulch is placed against the tree then it can make the surface moist which results in the cracking of the bark.
  • It also promotes the growth of the different pests and insects around the tree along with the unwanted plant-like weed.

So you know everything about mulching and how should it be done, now you can practice these methods around your plants or trees and improve their growth and protect them from different conditions.
