I Planted More Than 50 Fruit Plants! Never Thought So Many Fruits Could Grow in a Terrace Garden!

In today’s urban lifestyle, lack of space often keeps people from pursuing their gardening passion. But a terrace garden can change that—it’s not just for flowers and decorative plants, you can actually grow a wide variety of fresh fruits too! Here, I’ll share my personal experience of planting over 50 fruit-bearing plants on my rooftop and how they are thriving today.

How I Started My Terrace Garden

Initially, I believed terrace gardens were only suitable for flowers and small plants. But soon I discovered that fruit trees like lemon, guava, papaya, pomegranate, and even mango can be successfully grown in large containers or drums.

  • I began with a few small plants.

  • Prepared the soil with organic compost, cow dung manure, and vermicompost.

  • Used large pots and grow bags for planting.

Fruits Growing in My Terrace Garden

  1. Lemon – useful year-round and easy to grow.

  2. Guava – gives plenty of fruits even on small plants.

  3. Papaya – fast-growing and perfect for terrace gardening.

  4. Pomegranate – beautiful and fruitful at the same time.

  5. Banana, Mango, and Sapodilla (Chikoo) – growing well in big drums.

Now my terrace looks like a mini fruit orchard!

Caring for Fruit Plants in a Terrace Garden

  • Sunlight: At least 6–7 hours of direct sunlight daily.

  • Watering: Avoid overwatering; stagnant water can rot the roots.

  • Fertilization: Add organic manure every 15–20 days.

  • Pruning: Regular pruning keeps the plants healthy and productive.

  • Pest Control: Use neem oil or homemade organic sprays.

Benefits of a Terrace Fruit Garden

  • Fresh, chemical-free fruits right at home.

  • Keeps the terrace cooler and reduces indoor temperature.

  • A wonderful way to connect children with nature.

  • Improves air quality and enhances the home environment.

Conclusion

I never imagined growing so many fruit plants on a rooftop was possible. But today, my terrace garden not only brings me joy and peace but also provides fresh, home-grown fruits. If space limitations have kept you from gardening, start your own terrace garden—you’ll be amazed at the results!
